Liberalism is a theory in which progress is not limited to the extent of personal tradition, and does not limit itself to past understanding and or social acceptance of any particular time. The theory allows for progress, for the good or bad –depending on the personal opinion- and is only truly successful under a form of government. (Ideally a Liberal Democratic Body, or hey, even a Liberal Dictator would do the trick –ha ha) Furthermore, Liberalism has many key enemies – Conservatism being a key contender with it’s “We’re holding on” outlook on morality and social allowances, and it’s misconstrued understanding on taking 2010 to 1810 – OK, that may be a little bit of an overstatement, but it helps insinuate the extent of the importance that is misconstrued!

A myth in this theory of Liberalism is the idea of having a Global Society, or there could be one if need be. This idea is a very liberal idea in which, socially, “AMERKKAA” actually has communication and intelligence with other states around the globe, and there is, in essence, a form of global communication. No more “America is a tune.  It must be sung together” nonsense like Gerald Stanley Lee had once said, because in the myth of a Global, or International Society, America is only a single tune in a whole orchestra in which all nationalities sing in sync and with harmonious functionality. The myth also ties into the “web-culture” of today, using web based communication tools such as Twitter, Facebook, and WordPress – But for Heavens Sake, really, who uses WordPress? (This is actually my first ever Paper-Blog on WordPress) – But back to my initial intent of explaining a Global Society. It is important to educate yourself with this next fact that I am about to expound upon via my fingertips: The only reason a Global Society exists (In whatever form that it actually does exist today) is for product. And by product, I am speaking of interest and gain. There would be no Global Society and or communication between nationalities if there were no benefits for each individual party. There is no one benefactor with an International Society. Even if one nation enacted to help a fellow nation in need with no benefit for themselves, it was indeed rooted and originated by interests of each party and or an existing party before the act was considered. So my conclusion? Global Society for common interests – Happens every day, but a Global Society/Culture? It doesn’t happen – Not today anyway. But there are many whom like to play with the thought. We can look into novels for the sense of a Global Culture, and even look to the cinema for a taste.

A prime example of a Global Society with Global Culture (Though forced – still counts though) is a movie that I have recently watched, The Day the Earth Stood Still (TDTESS). I am mainly referring to the remake in 2008, though I also see similarities in the original version as well. But in the 2008 remake movie of TDTESS, Keanu Reeves is portrayed as a mountaineer on a 1928 expedition of some intense snow-storm engulfed mountains in India. He stumbles upon a block of ice with a something glowing underneath and decides to use his pick axe to break the ice away. (Who would do that? Not me- and knowing what happened to Keanu’s character in this movie, it’s a good thing!) After breaking the ice away from the glowing, then realized sphere, he is blinded by a bright light, and in result falls unconscious.  He wakes up to find a cause-unknown scar on his right arm.

The introduction of an unknown presence of a glowing sphere, (especially in 1928 when giant illuminated and luminescent spheres were unthought-of) introduces a sense of a not so traditional value type film, leading away from conservatism and may or may not be headed towards realism as the plot progresses. But most of all it exemplifies Liberalism with the myth of creating such a Global Society like I have previously expressed, and here’s how it starts. In the movie, further going with the plot, a second giant luminescent sphere travels to Earth and lands in Central Park, But this time in the year 2008. An alien being comes out from its lights, and soon gets shot by a soldier. After rehabilitation, it eventually changes its form to that of a human – which just so happened to be the same human that was blinded by the light in 1928, Keanu Reeves Character. (The scar on the arm was understood as a blood sample, which gave the alien race the ability of cloning a human being) This not only leads the United States of America into panic mode, but also other nations as well, as the United States had all of the information – and the alien being under US captivity. Other nations flocked for information from the US, and while also in panic mode, spheres of their own started showing up as if they were already placed under the earth ahead of time causing necessary communication between states that under normal circumstances would have never been in touch.

But this story takes Liberalism to a whole new level. With the United States in panic, the President and Vice President are taken away to safety, leaving the Secretary of State, ahem, Madam Secretary of State in command of the Federal Government. That is a powerful statement that exemplifies Liberal values such as equality and liberty. Hillary Clinton tried for President and did not succeed. Sarah Palin tried for Vice President and did not succeed. This woman is the face of those women getting the chance of being put in the position of power so longing to be reached. Putting a female character into a completely male dominated role. But that is another story for another time.

Later on in the story, it is made known that there is more than one alien race, all of which are behind the same scheme, which is to rid the earth of the Human race as we are the ones destroying the planet. (It turns into an environmental activism type film as well) Which being said, brings an even more epic, and in depth understanding to the term Global Society, which now will be a modified term, changed to an Intergalactic Society. So we went from Earth, and the orchestra of that planet, to in the grand scene, finding a whole new orchestra, an intergalactic, much larger orchestra, separate from Earths tune. In the plot, all other alien races come together to decide the fate of Humanity, seeing Humanity as a destructive, ignorant race, and Keanu Reeves character is the scout to the planet Earth sent by the other orchestra, and is the one who is to make the final decision and activate the weapon of mass destruction. (Which in this case is a 200 ft. tall Robot)

Once the Alien, Klaatu, escapes from human harness with the assistance of a passionate scientist, he observes humanity for himself, but with an external view of our world, deeming it just as previously thought, destructive and ignorant to change. Only when talking to an undercover alien on Earth, who know Earth’s people and how they truly are, does Klaatu finally see that people are a race of compassion, intelligence, and change, and after a discussion with a scientist awarded a Nobel Peace Prize does Klaatu understand the value of communication, as he realizes (and this is the turning point of the movie) that only when a race is at its breaking point will it realize the importance of change. (The scientist asks Klaatu about his race and if it ever was faced with destruction, and it had been when its star was on the verge of exploding, linking that to the Human Race’s current situation) Klaatu, who had already activated the weapon, then hastily gets to Central Park to deactivate the weapon, ending the movie.

When the story began, there was no sense of a Global Society between the nations of Earth, which in return caused the Human race to be portrayed as a war-fighting, destructive and ignorant race of beings – and that lack of global communication, plus the added separation of the Earth’s Orchestra and the Intergalactic Orchestra caused the already world-wide havoc to become a world-wide panic on the verge of destruction. If the nations of the Earth had communicated in the first place, then the Humans would have had a sense of what was happening to its planet, and in return would have a sense of direction in which to turn. If the Intergalactic Orchestra had communicated with Earths Orchestra in the first place, and did not assume failure of a Global Society on Earth, (It wasn’t failed, we just didn’t have one!) then the direction would have been clear and there would have been no need for an intervention which in effect would have destroyed a whole race of people. It makes you think about how important and necessary communication actually is, and how a Cultural Global Society is needed – Today.

Even though I am comparing Liberalism and having a Global Society to a fictional plot, it still shows the same importance as if it were a real scenario, and brings us an important fact to life that, unfortunately, we fail to realize: Communication is key. Having each and every one of our tunes played in a grand orchestra is vital to the success of humanity, in one way or another. If Global Communication would have been active in the first place, then a whole race of people would not have been threatened to their extinction, and that my friends, is an epic statement. Imagine what could be different in today’s society if we had a form of a Cultural Global Society in place! The world could be so different than it is. Imagine what we can prevent, and imagine what good we can do in the future, and what directions we can move forward in as a race, rather than many different directions as seperate states.

Putting all differences aside is feeble compared to the immensity of bringing all of our similarities together.

Just something to ponder.
